Generally Asked Questions
The first session is an opportunity to discuss what has brought you to counselling, understand your concerns and identify what you hope to achieve. We will also discuss relevant background information, confidentiality and how we might work together.
What happens in a first session?
1
Yes. Confidentiality is an important part of counselling and helps create a safe space where you can speak openly about your thoughts, feelings and experiences.
Information shared during counselling is treated with care and handled in accordance with applicable professional and ethical guidelines, as well as relevant South African legislation, including POPIA.
However, there may be circumstances in which information must be disclosed, such as serious concerns about someone's safety, a legal obligation to disclose information, or another recognised exception to confidentiality.
Where possible and appropriate, any limits to confidentiality will be discussed with you beforehand. These limits, along with how your personal information is stored and used, will be explained as part of the consent process.
Is what I say confidential?

In South Africa, psychologists have specialised training to assess, diagnose, and treat psychological conditions, and their scope depends on their registration category.
Registered Counsellors provide psychological screening, basic assessment, supportive counselling, psychoeducation and preventative interventions to improve emotional well-being and everyday functioning. They also identify when a client needs more specialised assessment or treatment and refer appropriately.
Both professions must practise within their HPCSA-approved scope
What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Registered Counsellor?
3
No. Counselling can help you navigate everyday challenges, build self-awareness, improve emotional well-being and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult situations. Seeking support can be a proactive step towards personal growth.
